The Minority Engineering Educational Task is a student-ran organization. Our mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible minority engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.” We host various programming that has provided academic, professional, leadership, and social support to minorities studying to obtain technical degrees from Rutgers University since 1975.

 

The High School Outreach Program has been a part of our organization’s Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program for over 20 years. The PCI program strives to stimulate pre-collegiate student interest in the STEM fields – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – in response to the lack of minorities pursuing technical degrees.

 

Each semester, high school students from all over New Jersey, and in surrounding areas, are invited to spend a weekend at Rutgers University School of Engineering to receive a hands-on overview of the benefits of a career in engineering. Throughout the weekend, the students receive guidance from college students, who are enrolled in various engineering disciplines, as well as information about the collegiate admission and financial aid process. Students will have a chance to collaborate on several projects that will help foster leadership and networking skills. By the end of the program, students will have a better understanding of college life; it’s our sincere desire that students will get an understanding of their future goals, strengths, and weaknesses.

 

The High School Outreach Program is highly recommended for high school juniors and seniors – whether they are interested in a STEM field or in attending Rutgers University.
